When it comes to progression in music, the Alternative genre may be doing the best work of any of them. I’ve personally witnessed a transformation in the bands who have played Warped Tour for the past decade and I don’t simply mean who has been asked to play. In many cases it’s the bands themselves who are experimenting with new sounds and influences, most of the time hitting the nail on the head.
grandson is the stage name for Toronto native, Jordan Benjamin. Although his homeland may be our neighbors to the north, the message in his music is packed with protest lyrics fit for the resistance down here in the United States of America. Forget the days of the folksy “attack” on the government. grandson comes out swinging with every lyric tearing down the curtains of American Oppression:
“Beg me for mercy
Admit you were toxic
You poisoned me just for
Another dollar in your pocket
Now I am the violence.”
Benjamin states in his brand new video for “Blood//Water” which features the stereotypical American family…you know, the one that has never existed, but generations before us claim we need to go back to? However, the story of this particular household grows darker and darker as it unfolds and comes to life (if you can call it that).
It’s not a surprise to hear that grandson started out as a DJ. His blending of styles is silky smooth contrasted perfectly with his rugged vocals and sharply jagged delivery. The message in his music is as clear as it is ominous and most of all important.
