Clik here to view.Alfred Thomas and Daniel Richards made a pact years ago to be self-starters. They decided that their art form was music and they created WIINSTON. The lifelong friends write, records and produce all of their own music. The Danish duo signed a deal with Capitol Records through A&R Nate Albert, who is credited with discovering The Weeknd and Florence & The Machine, to release a few singles, but on their own accord WIINSTON wanted and needed their creative independence. The result is their latest single, “Substance”.
The dark, fuzzy R&B themed single is laced with a haunting melody that is moody and introspective. “Substance” brings around the idea that being alone and focusing your mind inward instead of needing the attention of outside influences and socializing. It is an introvert’s anthem.
“It’s those long nights you’d rather spend by yourself cause you feel less alone in complete silence,” WIINSTON confirms.
Their style, which is a down-tempo electro-pop sound mixed with hip-hop, is entrancing and relatable and their creativity is built on those volatile emotions.
“We paint the picture with feelings and moods and just play around until we like it,” WIINSTON states. “It all comes to us very intuitively and fast, and the lyrics are shaped as pictures before they are written down.”
And that makes complete sense listening to “Substance”. It is a sonic painting that captures the solo mindset with subtle, but intricate, details. At first, it could be mistaken for simplicity, but in reality, it is a masterful use of negative space letting your mind be active and absorbing every intimate thought that went into creating the track. WIINSTON has found that balance that eludes a lot of artists. Listen to this track and enjoy the last bit of solace in the twilight of summer.
