Emily Bell & The Talkbacks are a force to be reckoned with. Her unabashed, full-throttle alternative rock style is perfectly represented in the title of her upcoming EP, Kali. If you are unfamiliar with the Hindu goddess, Kali is generally the destroyer of evil forces, or simply put the goddess of destruction. And as disciples of Kali, the alt-rock songstress and her band are out to break down the walls of gender inequality and promote female empowerment.
The first single, “Can’t Talk Back”, is a bold, unapologetic anthem. And the music video backs it up. The video features the Austin Raiders, an all-female football team out of Austin, TX. It brilliantly shows that no matter your gender, everyone is powerful and strong.
And do not think for a moment that Emily Bell & The Talkbacks stop there. Nope. This epic 5-song EP is a nonstop emotional bombshell with shades of The Runaways, another female lead band that broke down barriers. It is especially apparently on “Goddess of Destruction”. The rocking, and at times harsh, vocals of Bell are strong in an uncomfortably brilliant way. It is impossible to ignore her.
Emily Bell also had a tender side to her and it is conveyed on the final track, “Crashing Hearts”. This ballad is shows her vocal versatility, but it still is not a sappy love song.
The unadulterated power and rock themes are just want the musical world needs from a strong female lead and Emily Bell & The Talkbacks are stepping into the role without a second thought. Her path down empowerment and gender equality is admirable and she backs it up with a good EP.
