Molehill, an indie band from Champaign, IL, drops their third release, Hearts On Fire, with some fanfare digging deeper into production of their music while still maintaining their alternative style. The quartet, consisting of lead singer and lyricist Peter Manhart, bassist Trevor Jones, drummer Devin Staples and keyboard/synth player Greg Van Zuiden, have produced something that borders on experimental/progressive rock.
“Old Solider” is a dark, almost soul-crushing, song about a religious veteran’s final days spent in a nursing home. Their lead single and title track, “Hearts On Fire”, takes its inspiration from the uprising in the Ukraine when civilians stood up to the government. It is this type of storytelling songwriting that, in a lot of cases, is missing from today’s music and Molehill is taking a personal interest in making it vogue again.
When a band releases a good EP, like Hearts On Fire, there is an overwhelming desire to have more. Honestly, one of the drawbacks to this EP is the fact that it is only 3 songs. Clocking in at just under 10 and a half minutes, the replay value is severely limited. Either way, it is a worthy EP to be mixed in as a part of a playlist, for sure.
Hearts On Fire by Molehill will be available on May 12, 2017, but can be pre-ordered on their website with other cool merchandise!
