You know what they say, “Die an emo band or live long enough to see yourself become an alt-pop band.” They do say that, right? Maybe it was just a meme I saw somewhere. Anyhow, although the quote may seem a little harsh to some, I actually don’t see it as a bad thing at all. What’s lacking from the pop world is decent writing and what is sometimes lacking in the emo-alternative world is maturation over time. I personally feel like bringing “heart on your sleeve” style lyrics are exactly what popular music needs in this rhyme-time riddled radio age.
All Time Low have been slowly evolving into an alt-pop sound over the last few years, but their latest album, Last Young Renegade, almost fully solidifies them in that genre. Alex Gaskarth‘s voice is still indistinctly his and the lyrics stay true to what All Time Low always has been (albeit without the party anthems from the past), but the production is much more sophisticated than what All Time Low fans may be used to.
Standout tracks include “Dirty Laundry” and “Ground Control” (f/ Tegan and Sara), while “Nice2KnoU” does give loyal fans a bit of a nod to the All Time Low of old. I am sure there will be a significant amount of sighs and groans from those who are nostalgic for the glory days of emo-alternative music, but something tells me that once they give Last Young Renegade a chance, they’re going to come around as well. Overall, a solid release from All Time Low.
