Broadside - Paradise

I remember being high school aged and having a much different summer playlist blaring through my truck’s speakers than most anyone my age. While everyone else was jamming to Usher, The Black Eyed Peas and P!nk, I was listening to New Found Glory, The Ataris, Yellowcard, Dashboard Confessional and Motion City Soundtrack, just to name a few.

Los Angeles by way of Virginia’s Broadside are helping provide those with an alternative taste in music a similar option to what I had back in the 2000s rolled into one with their sophomore effort, Paradise. An album that Broadside has checked all the boxes on. It is energetic. It is edgy and most importantly it is fun! Brash lead vocalist in Ollie Baxxter does more than just keep up. The album starts fast and does not really slow down until the final ukulele backed track, “I Love You I Love You It’s Disgusting”.

Listen close enough and it is hard to miss the influences from bands like The Used, The Starting Line and All Time Low. Not to mention, Baxxter’s uncanny vocal resemblance to The Rocket Summer. That being said, do not mistake these influences for a lack of originality. We are just simply approaching a time where this style of music is a throwback of sorts.

Paradise is solid through and through, but I have to admit that the aforementioned “I Love You I Love You It’s Disgusting” is a surprising standout moment on the album. The ukulele is a really nice change of pace and the song is charming both lyrically and vocally. Perhaps it will inspire an acoustic release in the future.

So kids, for those of you who will not be listening to Chainsmokers, Harry Styles and the like this summer. Have no fear, Broadside is here to take you to your own kind of paradise.

The sophomore album Paradise by Broadside will be available everywhere on June 16, 2017, but pre-order the album on iTunes now! And check out their video for “Hidden Colors” below!
