Long Island natives Øff Guard are taking the familiar alternative rock genre and balancing it out with a little bit of pop and punk. Their second single, “Strawberry Moon”, is fraught with strong, sharp guitar riffs and rockin’ harmonies that complement the heartfelt vocals. The New York quintet, consisting of vocalist Matt Weiss, bassist Tyler Embry, guitarists Matt Becker and Doug Tuchler and drummer Nick Kolokathis, are blazing a new path for their punk/pop style and “Strawberry Moon” is a warning shot across the bows of the incumbents.
The depth and layered song is akin to early alt-pop, like Jimmy Eat World, but the band has some room for growth. There in some aspects the song is a little muddled, but with maturity and time, a band like Øff Guard could provide the much needed new blood into the fading punk-pop scene. And with their debut EP, Set The Scene, due out in October, we have something to look forward to.
So if you are looking for something new, a little raw and independent, then Øff Guard might be just what you are looking for.
