Over time we have been able to build relationships with the PR people that we work with. After a while, they know what we will like and what might be up our alley. But occasionally they will throw us something completely different just to see what we think. SC Mira was one of those hail mary types and what a throw! The Winnipeg-based quintet took a moment from their busy road schedule to chat about their upcoming EP, Keep Crawling, and the invention of the death pop genre.
I am so excited to introduce you to Canada’s SC Mira!

Lemonade Magazine: Hey guys! Thanks for joining us today! How’s it going?
SC Mira: Awesome. We’re on the road now. Currently in the van on the home stretch of our tour.
LM: You are flying a little below the radar right now, so can you tell us a little bit about the band and the origins?
SC Mira: We took the last year to write and really work on the new music we were making. Our sound was moving far away from the folk pop it was when we first started this band and we had to work that out. It was a really important time for us. We self-produced a bunch of singles we’ll be putting out – with “Mexico” as the first – and we learned so much about what we want and don’t want and where we’re going musically.
LM: With the completely unique single, “Mexico” off the upcoming EP, Keep Crawling, being a mesmerizing, cracker of a song. How did your sound evolve in to this crazy, catchy, outlandish death pop style?
SC Mira: We started to really evolve when we hit the road for the first time. We did a five-week tour as a new band. Playing every night, we realized we were meant to put on a show so things slowly started getting heavier and changing. When Caro (keys) joined the band we became a lot more synth-driven and that made room for us to experiment with different sounds which we had started doing a bit before, so that’s kind of how we ended up here, with “Mexico”.
LM: What was it like working with mix-engineer Ferro Montanino, who has a very different style?

SC Mira: Quite amazing honestly. He is very good at what he does and it was an incredible experience to sit and work with him on the tracks. We wanted a fresh ear for tones and harmonies and as a pop producer he brought a lot to the table. We’re not a pop band in the traditional sense but we also don’t want to close ourselves off to what’s universally fun and relevant. His perspective was so valuable.
LM: When a genre is coined because of your music, what kind of pressure does that create to keep being inventive?
SC Mira: I guess we’ll find out as we go, but there’s no general worry. We have a stronger sense of ourselves now than we ever have and continuing to make music we think sounds dope and says something is really all we can do. If it requires a new name we’ll make one up.
LM: And with Keep Crawling on the way, what else should we expect from SC Mira in 2017 and 2018?
SC Mira: There will be more music to come. We’ve been working hard for a while so it doesn’t end with Keep Crawling.
