Artists love to think they are all rebels, but in reality you have your fair share of conformists, wannabes and those who will do anything to get attention. It’s actually rare when you find an artist who truly doesn’t give a damn and does whatever they want. I am not talking about the phony “look at me as I flip the bird” individualism. I am talking true, unaffected originality. If you have enough patience though, chances are you will find a four leaf clover and when it comes to Margaret Glaspy, I honestly believe she fits the metaphor.
Over three years since her debut EP, If & When, was released, Glaspy debuts her first full length album, Emotions and Math, and it’s as awesome as she is intriguing. If you took a little but of Laura Marling, a decent portion of Elliott Smith, and then smacked me at the face for trying to compare her wonderfully unique sound to anyone, you might get a slight idea of what Emotions and Math is like.
Glaspy‘s character filled vocals are accompanied perfectly by a grungy blues sound throughout the album as she spills her life stories. Whether they be hers or a work of fiction is irrelevant as they are delivered genuinely.
Some of my personal favorite tracks on the album include “Memory Street”, “Anthony” and “Black and Blue”, but as it is with any great album, every single track is solid.
