I have always enjoyed dark, brooding rock music. I think it started early with bands like NIRVANA and Alice In Chains then continued on with Evanescence and the Deftones. That sense of foreboding and the depressing tones in concert with droning, yet soul-crushing, guitar riffs and the pleading vocals are perfectly realized in VISTA‘s upcoming EP, Long Live. Seriously, this EP is filled with blackened themes that are wrapped in an alternative bow, and while the anthem rock may have that sense of desperation, the overall theme is more about building hope.
Lead singer Hope Vista has been wowing us with her rock-inspired vocals for years and the addition of guitarist Greg Almeida has only enhanced her ability to rock. The 7-song EP’s themes range from standing against the establishment (“Allegiance”) to carving out an oasis within their dystopian world. This idea of a concept EP is nothing new, but the execution of each track is hard-hitting and emotionally charged and does not falter.
In many ways, when listening to Long Live you are transported into something that resembles cinematic worlds of Mad Max or The Hunger Games. It is, while still maintaining cohesiveness, a grand and expansive musical world. Even the re-imagined “Dominance 2.0”, a hold over from the frontwoman’s solo days, just helps the Long Live gather momentum on this non-stop thrill ride.
And one of the best tracks is “Part III”, which is an acoustic song that lasts barely over a minute, but it shows the versatility that VISTA has to bring the tempo down and play a tender, heartfelt ballad. It is a brilliant mid-track song that gives a second of reprieve before hopping back in.
So if you are looking for a little harder, but can shows a bit of tenderness, then you need to pick up Long Live by VISTA. You will not be disappointed.
