Today we are pleased to introduce an exclusive premiere of Taylor Phelan‘s brand new lyric video for his single, “Monsters”. The Voice alumni also took a few extra minutes to talk about his experience on the music competition, the inspiration for the song, “Monsters” and what he has planned for 2018 and beyond! Lemonade Magazine: Hey Taylor! Thanks for taking the time! First off, can you give us a little musical history?
Taylor Phelan: Music has always been around for me. I guess you could say that most of the people in my family are musically inclined. Although, it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I realized my own knack for music and started to see it as something I wanted to pursue. I’d never thought of it as a career before then. At 16 I started writing my own stuff and I haven’t stopped since!
LM: You are an alum of NBC’s The Voice. What was the best piece of advice you received from the coaches?
TP: The episode that I went home, I remember Adam running over to me after and saying, “Man, this sucks but you seriously should be home writing your own music.” That affirmation has stuck with me. It was almost as if he was telling me that there was nothing left for me to gain by being on the show any longer and that I really just needed to get to work.
LM: So something totally cool is happen in conjunction with this interview. We are premiering the lyric video for your new single, “Monster”! What was the inspiration for the song?
TP: Literally, the song came from my 4-year old and her fear of the dark. Metaphorically, the song is about the choice you have to make regarding what kind of person you will be, the kind that runs from your fears or the kind that faces them head on and dares to venture into where they live. We all have monsters and the song is a challenge to face them.

LM: You released 1 of 2 this summer and it filled with toe-tapping alternative tracks like “Help” and the aforementioned “Monster”. What kind of tracks should we expect on your upcoming followup EP, 2 of 2?
TP: I would say that the upcoming EP is simply “more.” It’s bigger, smaller, more danceable, more hooks. I’m really excited to get the second half out into the world!
LM: And with the second EP on the horizon and a tour being scheduled, what kind of preparation do you go through to ready yourself for the road?
TP: I hardly every workout but I like to get in a routine a month or so before tour a season. I try to start doing daily vocal warm-ups two weeks before hitting the road to condition myself. I get pretty strict about taking vitamins regularly to make sure I don’t get sick and I do as much stuff with the girls as possible before leaving town. Touring is physically and mentally exhausting so I try to set myself up well from day one.
